Website Guardian

We want websites to remain secure, so we feel we have an obligation to alert the public when we think there are companies peddling services that are harmful to security. Tje Website Guardian certainly seems like of those.

One of the claims about their software is "The ability to easily lock and unlock all the files and folders on your website. This makes it almost impossible for hackers to add malicious code to you website." We previously wrote about the common misconception that file permissions play a role in website security. If someone has access to your website files they can, and ofen do, just change the permissions to make them writeable again if they have been made unwriteable. So the claim that the software makes it "almost impossible" to add malicious code by locking the files is simply false. The makers of the software either don't understand website security or they do and hope that you don't so they mislead you. In either case it is a big red flag about the software.

Most of the rest of the claimed abilities of the software are things that if you have proper security measures in place are not needed. If you don't have the proper measures in place there is a good chance that you could be hacked even with this software.

You also have to wonder when the website's copyright is listed as beginning in the year 2000, but the domain name was registed on June 2, 2011.

You can find out the actually things that need to be done to keep your website secure here. We can help you to do those things (we are also happy to provide a free consulation on what you specifically need to do) and if your website is already hacked we can clean it up for you.
